As a business owner today, the reality of facing closure or bankruptcy is a very real scenario. I cannot tell you how many times I have faced this scenario over the 35 years of doing business.
In the 1940s, it was said to go work in the factories. In the 1950s, it was implied to go and increase your families and have lots of children, there's no shortage of work.
In the early days of becoming a young man, it was the 1970s. Levi jeans were going national, McDonald restaurants were expanding to every corner of America, it was all about growth and expansion. So instead of working for corporate America, I decided to go into my own business.
Life was still simple, more modern than the 50s and 60s yet still the same simplicities before the technical age really came upon us. You could look around in any Yellow Pages or business directory and put your finger on any listing and tell yourself,' that's the business i'll go into'.
Head over to the kitchen table with a writing pad at pen in hand and began to sketch out a simple 2-3 page business plan. Go to the local printers and have some business cards and letterhead printed up. Set up a telephone, place an ad in the Yellow Pages, have some flyers made up and start posting around town and passing out to your friends.
Aside from worrying about tools, vehicles and so forth, as long as you have a talent combined with the above steps you were officially in business. No thought of incorporating as that was an issue for one or two years down the road. Even insurance and liability was a thought for a few months down the road.
And that was it. You are now officially in business working for yourself, no bosses, very little overhead, and the freedom to think about dreams.
Flash forward to today and I actually posits as I write this to think about the thousands of issues in trying to accomplish the same goal as back in the 70s. Same plan however due to the information-based world we now live in, we must now learn how to process all this information so that we can provide more information about what we do to the rest of the world. Basically marketing to a bigger world means having a business that spreads its information to the world.
It's interesting to see that if I started a business today cutting lawns or building fences and decks for my local community that must I setup my business, still for a global community.
Setting up and running a business today in a global community means that the grass cutting company or a deck building company in another city is doing the same thing. Therefore due to the larger customer base available, a successful company will grow to the point that it will service its surrounding cities with that same business.
I may be local to my customers however through the Internet that business in the neighboring city appears local and may even have cheaper prices due to volume. The customer does not see the fact that I am his neighbor and the competing company is perhaps 100 miles away. Therefore in today's Times, starting a small business has no bearing anymore, whereas all businesses big and small compete on the same playing field. It's actually reversed now where do to Internet marketing, the small business can now appear large. It now comes down to knowledge, or other words information.
I credit my experience and wisdom do to the fact of gathering knowledge and information. When I was a younger man it was through schooling as I became older I took my courses and then as I became older still I attached myself to older and wiser businessmen for mentorship.
But, I cannot forget the fact that self study, self-improvement through the use of libraries, magazine subscriptions, article databases, purchasing of books and of course, the good old Internet.
We are in an age where we cannot stop learning just when we think we know what all, something new pops up. A few quotes from the past come to my mind, the gentleman in the 50s who said," everything that can be invented has been invented" and the person who said, "computers will save paper"
Continue to learn, continued to read books and continue to make relationships with successful mentors. And if you read something that comes close to something you've read before, consider it a review. Trust me, you want everything you read to stick with you as it will be recalled for future use.
Aside from books and libraries, I do appreciate the abundance of e-books which are available all over the Internet on all topics imaginable. These ebooks can be downloaded to your computer at very little cost. They can then be uploaded to your personal devices such as iPads and ebook readers for study on the go. Happy studying, happy learning and go whistling while you work in the global economy. Visit www.bizhelpdownloads.com for a huge selection of Ebooks to help you with your personal self improvement.
